Beware! IRS Phone and E-mail scams

As a new tax filing season rapidly approaches, it is important to know a little about IRS policies so as to avoid scams and phishing. Even if at the time of filing you owe money to the IRS, the IRS will NEVER do the following:
1. Call you without first issuing a bill by mail. A telephone call is never the first approach. The IRS also will not demand immediate payment from you.
2. The IRS will not demand payment without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say is due.
3. You will never be required to use a specific method of payment, such as a money order or pre-paid debit card.
4. The IRS is not a credit card processor and will never ask for a card number over the phone.
5. The IRS will never threaten to bring in local law enforcement groups to arrest you for non-payment.

2018 Tax Reform for Businesses

New Deduction for Business/Pass-Through Income:
A 20% tax deduction is allowed for income earned from Sole Proprietorships (Schedule C), Limited Liability Companies, Partnerships and S-Corporations. For example, if you have $50,000 in business income, you can deduct $10,000 from taxable income. The deduction applies to the first $315,000 of income and reduces the effective marginal tax rate – the rate you actually pay. In practice, the reform is expected to save between 5 – 6% in taxes.
